Forbes: AFU, Russian Army Having Dueling Offensive In Kursk Region

One of the parties was proactive.

The AFU and the Russian army are actively using drones in the fighting in Kursk region. Such dueling offensive operations are costly for each of the opposing sides, military analysts say. Last Sunday, 5 January, the AFU and the RF Armed Forces simultaneously launched an offensive in the west of Kursk region.

It is possible that one of the parties knew about the impending offensive and decided to be proactive, but it is not yet known which party it was, Forbes reports.

Whatever the case may be, neither side made any progress during Sunday's offensive operation.

Experts continue to remind that it is always more difficult to attack than to fight in defence. In modern warfare, this situation is even more difficult because of the large number of drones that track every move.

It is possible that on January 5, units of the 34th or 155th brigades attacked the position of the 47th brigade of the AFU in 6 waves with the help of 50 armoured vehicles. The enemy was immediately attacked by AFU drones, artillery and missiles.

Reconnaissance drones also showed Putin's army advancing along key AFU trenches east of Leonidovo.

However, this area is still listed as a ‘grey zone’ and it is not yet known whether the occupiers have managed to gain a foothold there.

However, the enemy suffered heavy losses in the battles for this area, with 45 killed and 53 wounded.

On the same day, fighters, possibly from the 80th Airborne Brigade, moved by Stryker towards Berdin.

The enemy decided to attack the Ukrainian forces with fibre optic drones, as the other drones became easy prey for the AFU's electronic warfare system. It is still unknown who is currently holding Berdin.

Russian war correspondents claim it is in the hands of Putin's army. Rob Lee, an analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, is sure that the AFU could not take Berdin or any other settlement on this section of the front. Experts say both of Sunday's offensives were not successful for either side.
