The request of the Japanese embassy was rejected.
Japanese diplomats were not allowed to attend the trial of a Japanese citizen, Nakanishi Masatoshi, the Japanese publication Kyodo reports.
The fifty-year-old Japanese man was arrested in Belarus in July last year on suspicion of espionage. Masatoshi worked in Belarus as a teacher of the Japanese language. He is accused of taking more than 9,000 photographs of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border over six years and sending them to Japan.
The Japanese embassy asked the Belarusian leadership to allow them to observe the trial, but this request was rejected.
