Belarus Tightens Control Over Internet Domain Names

The document has come into force.

The Operational and Analytical Centre under Lukashenka has issued amendments to the decree ‘On measures to improve the use of the national segment of the Internet’. Now the technical administrator of the domain zone has the right to cancel the registration of domain names that are detrimental to ‘national interests’. The corresponding document is published on the National legal Internet portal.

‘When identifying a domain name that can harm the national interests of the Republic of Belarus, the administrator of the national domain zone has the right to make a decision to cancel the record of its registration,’ reads the document.

Such domain names will be included in a special list.

In addition, the list of grounds for cancelling the registration of domain names has been expanded.

Currently, the technical administrator of the Belarusian domain zone is Belarusian Cloud Technologies LLC, which is fully owned by the state.

The document comes into force from the moment of its official publication.
