They are suspected of involvement in terrorist activities.
Tunisian law enforcement agencies reported the discovery of “equipment that does not correspond to the stated tourist purposes” on the detained Russians. This was reported to RBC by the Russian embassy in the country.
The diplomatic mission noted that the Russian citizens are suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. “Nevertheless, we do not rule out that the case may be reclassified on less serious grounds,” they added.
A group of 11 “tourists” from Russia were detained in Tunisia in November. They went with “research and local history” purposes to the settlement of Haidra in the province of Kasserine, located near the Tunisian-Algerian border. This area is under the special control of local security forces, since sensitive infrastructure facilities for Tunisia are located there, including those under the jurisdiction of the country's Ministry of Defense.
