The troops have been withdrawn.
North Korea has sent its best troops to help Russia in the war against Ukraine. After two months of fighting, the DPRK's losses were so great that it was necessary to urgently withdraw the group to the rear. This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources in Ukraine and the United States.
For the past two weeks, North Koreans have stopped appearing on the front line in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. The decision to withdraw was made against the backdrop of colossal losses in the fighting.
“Ukrainian soldiers who fought against North Korean units describe them as fierce fighters. However, as Ukrainian officials note, disorganization in the ranks of the North Koreans and the lack of coordination with Russian troops led to significant losses. According to Ukrainian military and frontline fighters, after arriving on the battlefield, North Korean soldiers are left to their own devices, attacking with minimal armor and rarely regrouping or retreating,” the article says.
Moscow’s hopes that the North Koreans would help push Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk region have never materialized.
The longer the Ukrainian Armed Forces maintain a foothold on Russian territory, the more it damages the reputation of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
According to American intelligence, it was North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un who initiated the sending of his troops to Russia. Putin happily supported the idea.
“Soldiers from the best-trained special forces units of the DPRK were sent to Russia. However, the Russians, apparently, used them as ‘cannon fodder’, sending them in waves to die on mine-strewn fields and under heavy fire from the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the NYT writes.
It was the severe losses that forced Kim to withdraw his troops. Experts are sure that this is a temporary measure. Most likely, the North Koreans will be returned to the battlefield after recovery and new training. Apparently, the Kremlin does not want to quarrel with Pyongyang by exterminating their soldiers in “meat assaults”.
